he wants to to investigate computers that they suspect users of abusing the internet...i know of the index.dat file...but what other tools can i use to find out what sites they have been surfing on?

You can look at the Internet history of the web browser.

If you have a firewall for their network, they can look at the logs that it generates, that should show all of the Internet traffic for all of the systems on the network
