Hiroki Kuroda ineffective as New York Yankees lose to Boston Red Sox 3-4 – MLB Update
New York Yankees were beaten by the Boston Red Sox 3-4 at Fenway Park in Boston, Massachusetts on Tuesday, September 11 in the opening game of their three match series.
Yankees took the early lead, thanks to Robinson Cano who grounded out to first in the first inning to put his side on the board. Red Sox were also determined to beat their arch Rivals. Jacoby Ellsbury singled to centre in the third to level the score 1-1.
Derek Jeter hit a ground rule double to right in the sixth inning to take the Yankees 3-2 ahead but the Red Sox were too hot to handle at Fenway Park. Dustin Pedroia belted a solo home-run to left in the sixth and Ellsbury delivered the tie breaking single
to right in the bottom of the ninth.
"You wouldn't be tied for first unless you found ways to win games throughout the course of 140-something games that we've played," Derek Jeter said. "So we've got to do it again."
New York’s starting pitcher Hiroki Kuroda looked completely out of sorts as he gave up eight hits and three runs in six plus innings. It seemed the Red Sox’s hitters were ready to deal with his fastballs and sliders.
"He was struggling a little bit, I heard, coming in, too," Yankees’ manager Joe Girardi said. "He hits a ball at his shoe tops to lead off the ninth. I mean, he just finds a way against us."
Relief pitchers Boone Logan, Joba Chamberlain combined to pitch one perfect inning and closer David Robertson conceded three hits and a run in 1.1 innings to take his seventh loss of the year.
"I was hoping to get the ball down and maybe get him to roll it over, maybe into a double-play ball," Robertson said. "When you make a bad pitch, things can happen."
Losing in a crucial encounter, Joe Girardi and company are now tied with Baltimore Orioles for first place on the American League East Division standings. Derek Jeter looked extremely disappointed at the end of the contest. Surely, he will be expecting the
players to bounce back to reclaim their number one status.
