Hispania Racing Team promote Toni Cuquerella to technical director – Formula 1 news
Toni Cuquerella who was the chief race engineer of Hispania Racing Team (HRT) has been promoted to the position of technical director, which has been unoccupied after the departure of Geoff Willis in 2011.
HRT have been struggling with its new car F112 which failed to qualify in the season opener held at Albert Park in Melbourne, Australia. Nevertheless, they managed to take part in the second race at Sepang International Circuit, last Sunday.
Moreover, the car was designed by Stephane Chosse, the chief of aerodynamics and Jacky Eeckelaert, the former technical co-ordinator, in Munich.
Cuquerella will be directing the steps to be taken in order to make the necessary advancements in the car to improve its pace for the races ahead.
Furthermore, Cuquerella, after admitting that the car has issues, said that he is prepared to take the necessary steps to resolve them. He also said that a technical director has many responsibilities in the team which have a great impact on the overall
performance of the team.
In addition, he said that he felt very delighted with the decision of the team’s management which considered him capable enough for this job. He added that he will try to bring the best out of himself in order to make the substantial improvements and the
critical preparations for the upcoming races.
“My priority is to solve the current car's problems to then develop it to its maximum potential, whilst also unifying and expanding the technical department, but I'm confident that we have a good work base and a clear direction to advance and have a good
project for the future,” he said.
Besides, Luis Perez-Sala, the team principal of HRT has expressed his full confidence on Cuquerella and has said that he is the right man to make the essential developments in the car.
“Toni Cuquerella has been a key figure in the team since its inception and, above all, in this new stage,” Perez-Sala said. “The transition from the previous project to this one hasn't been easy and a lot of work has been carried out that without vital figures
such as him wouldn't have been possible.”
