  1. Yes some black slaves fled to Mexico but the Spaniards also brought slaves to Mexico much earlier. When Mexico won it's independence from Spain, one of the first things they did was abolish slavery. The issue of slavery actually played a role in the war between Mexico and the US. Mexico allowed Americans to settle in Texas (which was then part of Mexico) but some of the Americans would bring their slaves into the territory. The Mexican government would take the slaves and free them which angered the American slave owners.

  2. Yes of course there are black Mexicans, however they're not the majority in Mexico.

Also as you mentioned, many of the slaves fled to Mexico & they were assisted & welcomed by the Mexican ppl during that time...(something many ppl don't know)

  3. I'm Mexican and we know about Afro Mexican culture, it's just underepresented, i recently traveled to Africa and let me tell you, i couldn't believe my eyes when I saw the endless similarities! You know that song, "La Bamba"? That's an example of Afro Mexican culture right there, here is one of my grandparents' favorite singers from Veracruz Mexico : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K_jg6IC2H...

Someone else mentioned Vicente Guerrero, he was Mexico's 2nd president and is still a very well respected figure in the History of Mexico

here's an article I found which I thought was very interesting. http://www.sfbayview.com/News/Editorial/...

  4. Wow, ya know, I've never thought about that but it makes perfect sense...I've always just assumed and heard that there were just Native Indian descendant Mexicans and Mexicans of Spanish descent and then just whatever mixed in between from migrations and so on...interesting!

  5. I'm a little surprised you didn't realize that were black Central Americans, but I'm glad you know now. Your teacher was not entirely correct. There was a lot of intermarriage between races in Latin America and the majority of the population has some African blood in them. However the only people who are considered black there are the ones who look mostly black. They didn't have the One Drop Rule there.

The Mexican thing I learned about fairly recently, but it makes sense.

  6. Yes, I'm from Mexico and in the southern part (especially Veracruz) there are people of african descent. Not many, but they are there. You cant always tell because some have mixed with native american looking mexicans from the south. I'm from north western Mexico and we don't really have any here but if you ever go you can tell that it has influenced their music and religion.

This is a mexican model named Johanna Santos and she is of african descent, she is not fully black however which is the case with almost all blacks in Mexico .

This is another Mexican model, but this one only has very little african blood, she is MOSTLY native american and white (like the majority of mexicans) Her name is Daniela Cosio

And then of course Kalimba, he is a mexican singer

  7. Lexdiamaond is right, there are about 1% Black mexicans, which is next to none. I lived in Southern California my whole life and I've never seen one. However, there are tons of Central Americans that are Black, that is nothing new.

  8. Yes, there are black Mexicans. Though they only make up 1% of the Mexican population, mexico has 100 million people so that means there are at least 1 million black mexicans. In fact, one of Mexico's great patriots, Vincente Guerrero, was half black.

Most of the black blood in mexico is diluted, however. Most of the Africans in mexico intermarried with whites and native americans, so the blood got mixed in so much so that the average mexican is only 3%-5% african in blood.

  9. That's a good fact. don't worry about rude remarks. actually i haven't seen any. you're right they'd just be closed-minded people. I know the black people in Mexico are probably the smallest minority there but i'm not sure. for some reason, if they're Catholic, i have a feeling that you'd see them with a statue of ST. MARTIN DE PORRES

I haven't seen the article but i know he was from Peru.

Anyway, a pretty trivial thing, u might still like to know. there's a Mexican singer by the name of KALIMBA. research him!

    *hugs*

  10. YES ITS ABOUT TIME SOMEBODY PUT IT OUT THERE
