Historian Bert Sugar picks em’ in upcoming bouts
Popular boxing website Fanhouse caught up with boxing legend Bert Sugar for the upcoming “Sugar” Shane Mosley-Sergio Mora bout in Los Angeles this weekend and got his take on a number of upcoming fights.
Besides giving his two cents on Mosley-Mora, Sugar said that Manny Pacquiao will defeat Antonio Margarito in their upcoming November 13 bout. When asked who would win between the seven-division titlist and the recently relicensed Mexican fighter, Sugar replied
without hesitation, “Pacquiao.” He added, “…too fast. Margarito throws wide punches, he [Pacquiao] will be inside him.”
Asked about the Marcos Maidana and Amir Khan bout (recently confirmed for the WBA junior welterweight title), Sugar said that he thinks Khan will take it, being the quicker and more technical fighter.
Finally, Sugar was willing to entertain the possibility that the younger Sergio Mora will be able to defeat boxing veteran and legend Mosley. “Mora surprised Vernon Forrest,” he said. “He’s capable. He just makes every fight tougher than it has to be.
He’s big and rangy and fights everything in close. I don’t understand it.”
Sugar is widely considered one of the preeminent boxing writers and historians. He has written over 80 books on boxing, and was elected to the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 2005.
“Boxing is the most fun you can have with your clothes on,” he chuckled as he strolled down the boulevard following the interview. He wore a white jacket, top hat, and puffed a cigar.
Mosley and Mora will touch gloves Saturday at the Staples Center, a venue that has brought Mosley great luck. In January of 2009, it was where he defeated Antonio Margarito after it was discovered the fighter was attempting to fight with loaded hand wraps.
Margarito was banned for 15 months following the incident.
