Does anyone who I talk to about historic benefits/restoration funding on a home in Sacramento, CA?

  1. You can only get funds if the house is a registered historic building.   The funds do not simply go to any older home, there are thousands of them in the Sacramento area.


  2. The State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO). It might be a stand-alone department, or it might be a division of another state agency. Under the federal Historic Preservation Act of 1966, every state has a SHPO, and they are gathered for federal purposes under the National Park Service.

    Use your Google to find California SHPO. They know about financial incentives for historic buildings.

    But remember that a good roof job for a historic house might run $50K, and typical grants are in the range of $5K. Between Iraq and a recession, you won't find many free dollars for privately owned property. Unless the owner is a rich Republican who doesn't really need a subsidy.
