Historic King of the Ring Match – The Rock vs. Undertaker for the WWF Championship - 1999
Wrestling fans still remember ‘The Attitude Era’ days of wrestling when the most electrifying man in the history of professional wrestling, The Rock, used to challenge his opponents in the middle of the ring without any hint of fear. It was 1999 King of the Ring and the legendary Deadman, Undertaker, was the WWF Champion. Undertaker was backed by the strong wrestling establishment in those days and The Rock desperately wanted to be the new WWF Champion, and thus challenged Undertaker for a fight with the WWF title belt on the line. There were thousands of people in attendance to watch The Rock clash with Undertaker in a historic match.
The match started in a bizarre fashion as Undertaker attacked the referee from behind and knocked him down. Undertaker did this because he wanted to defeat the Rock with the help of outside interference. But the People’s Champ, The Rock, suddenly grabbed Undertaker and delivered his electrifying signature move, Rock Bottom. This was supposed to be the end of the match, but the referee was knocked down and there was no one to count for the pin.
It was a chaotic situation as Undertaker slowly started to gather his strength. The referee also started to get up and focused his attention to the match. Undertaker grabbed The Rock from his neck and delivered the Chokeslam. Many people thought it as the end of the match as it is almost impossible to kick out of the Chokeslam. However, The Rock did the impossible when he kicked out before the referee’s final count of three. The crowd rose on its feet and applauded The Rock for his bravery and strength.
The Rock fought back with all his energy. Just when Undertaker was about to go Old School after climbing the top turn buckle, The Rock pushed Undertaker and the Deadman fell on the top ring. That was a huge blow for the Undertaker and the match started to change momentum from that very moment. The Rock took Undertaker outside the ring and delivered a close line to throw the Deadman over the boundary wall. The Rock then delivered hardcore punches to Undertaker’s face and banged his head on the second boundary wall.
Undertaker replied by banging the ring bell on The Rock’s face. The Rock was down and out and it was the ideal moment for the Undertaker to finish the match. Undertaker then proceeded to bang The Rock’s face hard on the top turn buckle of the ring. The Rock then picked Undertaker on his shoulders and delivered a Samoan drop on the ring floor. The Rock was now in complete control of the match and was just one move away to finish it all and become the new WWF Champion.
Just when The Rock was about to finish the match, Triple H came running in the ring and delivered a Pedigree to The Rock. That was a blatant disregard for the rules of professional wrestling, but the referee was knocked out again and could do nothing about it. Undertaker gathered his strength and delivered the Tombstone Piledriver and banged Rock’s head on the ring floor. It was over as the new referee counted to three with both of The Rock’s shoulders touching the ring floor.
Undertaker was victorious and retained his prestigious WWF Championship. After the match, The Rock was furious and told his fans that it took two wrestlers to beat the Great One. The Rock promised his fans that he would overcome all odds to become the next WWF champion. The Rock backed his words with action just a few months later when he held the golden WWF title proudly in the ring.
