Historic record of Irish Fencers in 2011 Midwest Fencing Conference Championship
The Sunday of March 6, was the biggest day in the history of championship, as the Irish Fencers set up an excellent undefeated record at 2011 Midwest Fencing Conference Championships. The Irish Fencers of University of Notre Dame won all of the six weapon
team events and became the first team in the history ever to win all the events of the day.
It happened for the first time in the 13-year period of Midwest Fencing Conference Competitions that any team out-classed the opposite teams in all of the weapons of the day and claimed gold medal.
Midwest Fencing Conference Championship is an annual competition that is held by the United States Fencing Association. 2011 Midwest Fencing Conference Championships took place from March 5 to March 6 at Notre Dame. Team events in Men’s Epee, Men’s Sabre,
Men’s Foil, Women’s Epee, Women’s Sabre and Women’s Foil were conducted on Sunday. All the team events were top ranked by Notre Dame Community. Total 1350 points were claimed with contribution of maximum 675 points by each Men’s and Women’s team. The contribution
by the each weapon is 225 points.
Ohio State’s fencers claimed second position in the tournament with 1250 scores and North-western claimed the top third position with 1190 points. Five events were played against Ohio State in the final and only final event was played against the top ranked
North-western. The individual contribution by Notre Dame is as follow:
In Men’s Epee Event, the Irish squad qualified into the table of 16 with an automatic bye. Soon they advanced to the first championship round of table-8 after the amazing victory over Xavier with 5-1 points. They won the quarter-final over Cleveland State
with amazing no touches against them, 5-0. After the victory of semi-final against North-western of 5-1 touches, Irish were stroked into the Number One seeded Ohio State in the play-off bout with a clean sweep a 5-0 result over the buck-eyes.
The Irish sabre team maintained the same streak after winning the final against Ohio State’s team of dangerous 5-4 touches. They defeated Minnesota in the table of 16, Lawrence in the quarter-final and North-western in semi-final, all streaks with 5-1 scores.
The Irish Foil Squad also played their final with same team. Irish team started at top seed. Before the final, they knocked off Lawrence, Wayne and Detroit with just one point lost against them. Irish squad earned their decisive victory over Ohio State with
three points lead of 5-2 score-line.
Two of three Women’s event finals were played against Ohio states and one against North-western. Irish Women’s Epee team moved to the finishing round after the victories against Detroit with 5-0, Oberlin with 5-2 and Chicago with 5-1 touches. They defeated
Ohio State with 5-2 touches to have gold medal.
Women’s Sabre squad racked up results over Lawrence with 5-0, Wayne State with 5-1 and Chicago with 5-3. Their final victory was likewise others, over Ohio States with 5-3 scores.
Irish Women’s Foil squad created thrilling environment in semi-final when North-western got 2-1 touches against Notre Dame, but soon Irish recovered and changed the event to the final victory of the day. A great record set by Irish community over the 14-year
