  1. The answer is both, but the one's that lead are generally more important.  Like the invention soap and basic antiseptics increased life spans substantially.  Every improvement in farming techniques that boosted yields allowed population to grow.  80 to 90 percent of people used to be farmers, now its less than 5 percent.  In modern times the computer changed things quite a bit.  Then there were many complimentary kinds of technologies that followed it but were unnecessary.  Like say the Ipod or more gadgetry in cars.  The invention of Electricity and the telephone were also societal transformers.
