  4. Cahiers, cahiers de doléances

    Intendant

Chief local representative of the crown administering a généralité which was either a province or a part of a province. Beginning in the 1640s, they oversaw all aspects of royal authority. There were thirty-four in 1789, many of whom were active reformers. Their power was undermined in 1787, paving the way for the provincial unrest and uprisings of 1789.

    Ancien Régime

The social and political structure of France, as it existed from the late 16th century until the French Revolution, typified by a hierarchical society and a dynastic state, where traditional orders and privileges were strongly upheld.

    Estates-General

An assembly representing the provinces of the French monarchy, established in medieval times. It comprised of three groups, the First Estate (clergy), the Second Estate (nobility) and the Third Estate (commoners). It had not been called since 1614, but was recalled in 1789.

    Parlement

The Paris Parlement was the most important of a number of Parlements which had both juridical and political functions. They had become a focus of opposition to the king, and were abolished briefly in 1771 until restored by Louis XVI in 1774, and were finally abolished in 1790.

    Absolutism

Absolute monarchy, a form of government where the monarch has the power to rule their land freely, with no laws or legally-organized direct opposition in force
