History behind pickled tomatoes. Are they an ethnic or a regional food?

I was trying to find where pickled tomatoes came from. I don't remember ever hearing about them before I came across them in a non-fiction essay.

  2. Ethnic, I mean. In Bulgaria we make green pickled tomatoes (I don't like its).

    we pickle the tomatoes.its a kind of appetizer that u'll find almost in every house here

    people used to do that as a way to keep food for longer time as possible, and its another way to not waist the extra harvest .

    we have 2 recipes,

    red tomatoes withe green beans garlic lemon and olive oil

    the other recipe its for the raw tomatoes while its still green

    with garlic green chili lemon and olive oil

    its easy and we eat it with fried chicken or fried eggs, its yummy
