  1. There is an entire hobby built around games based on wars. There is no sense in reinventing the wheel. Try this: http://www.boardgamegeek.com/game/17967. The game is free (although the page makes it look like a boxed game). All you have to do is follow the links to download the rules and counters.

  2. Snakes & Ladders (or Chutes & Ladders, as I knew the game) is exactly the right style for a WWI game.  But trenches could be a problem.  I'm assuming you want the board to look like a Snakes & Ladders board, but with something other than snakes and ladders.  Trenches as snakes would look funny.  Besides, trenches are a good thing, a protection from the enemy bullets.

Ladders were sometimes used by soldiers to exit their own trenches via the front when advancing.  Barbed wire always blocked their path (unless their artillery and, later in the war, tanks had cleared it away).  So Barbed Wire & Ladders might work.  The barbed wire stretching down the board would be visually interesting.

I have to disagree with LudoRex's suggestion.  Although I have the game, I have never played Origins of WWI.  I have played its more commercially successful twin, Origins of WWII.  It's a great game, and if you could produce such a game from scratch, that would be great.  It is not, however, a good template for a high school history project, because the power struggle that resulted in the war is too abstract in the game.

  3. Try a Monopoly-type game board, it might be harder to create but will get you much better marks. Make it called Trench-opoly or Digger-opoly or even War-opoly. Good luck with it and one major tip, take your time!!Make it look good.

    Hope this helped!!

  4. i just did a play on ww1 for history, i would suggest making a small monopoly type of game where the properties are Austria, Serbia, Britain, Germany, Russia, Mexico, the Zimmerman telegram, United States etc., jail could be being held captive by another side. and the characters could be Roosevelt, Hitler, Stalin, and Mussolini or just army men. and then going around the board could be the trenches, this is defiantly a guaranteed "A" !

          i hope this helps!
