  1. Civilizations originate near water, and spread from there.

  2. Better transportation.  A settlement on the coast or along a river would be the equivalent of having your house on the highway.

A good rule of thumb used in Roman days was that transporting goods 50 miles overland would cost thesame as the length of the  Mediteranean.

Remember, through most of human history, horses were usually a luxury Few people had them, but used mules or oxen instead.  If you had a horse on your farm, it would usually be used for work.  Horse racing was called 'the sport of kings' for a reason.

  3. Easier to reach.  Did you have a particular place in mind?

  4. Most settlements are started along the coast becouse before gas and steam engines were invented, water was the only source of energy to peoples who were going to settle.

  5. Transportation not being what it is today, and no highways, one would settle close to the coast line, and when they have more help they can cut timber, and make roads west.

  6. Because the coast provided the most food.  They could fish or hunt or farm from the coast. Also the coast provides a milder climate than inland areas where the weather tends to the extremes.

  7. The coast is where they landed on their sailing ships. It was convenient and they didn't know what was inland before the explorers started looking around. They had no transportation when they first arrived. This is true of most everywhere, but especially true of the US.

  8. Where? In what country?
