  1. A.  The Opium trade happened because (other than tea) China had nothing else the West wanted.  China was generally self-sufficient, the only thing she wanted was silver.  So, in general, the trade was silver for opium.

As a result, the British smuggled Opium from China to British Colonial India. Tensions grew between both countries when the smuggling was discovered and as a result the Opium War occured. The Chinese who lost the war were forced into tolerating the sale of Opium, as indicated in the the treaty of Nanking and tearty of Tianjing. Humilated and agitated at the loss of war and the continuing sales, the Boxer Rebeliion and the Taiping Rebellion ocurred.
