  1. Surprise.  The Battle that won the war was Dien Bien Phu where peasants pulled Iron Elephant cannons that weighed ten tons each over one hundred miles over hills and woods.  The French couldn't believe it when they saw the cannon (although they sure as h**l began to when it decimated them.)

  2. Ho Chi Minh established a united front movement, the Viet Mein - the League of Independence of Vietnam. War between France and Vietnam broke out in 1946 after negotiations went nowhere. Lasting nearly 8 years it was a very violent struggle.  The tactics that were used by the Vietnamese, that had never been seen before was the guerrilla tactics.  The Vietnamese used their knowledge of their homeland to hit-and-run from the French causing devastating results.  The end came dramatically in 1954 when the French surrendered their last outpost at Dienbienphu.

  3. Sounds like a homework question...why don't you ask your textbook!

  4. Ambushes on mobile formations and attacks on isolated outposts were the preferred tactics of the Vietminh.  Mass attacks were too bloody in the face of French firepower.

The strategy of the Vietminh was to keep fighting until the French gave up.

Dien Bien Phu was a similar to the attacks on the outposts, though on a much larger scale.  It was also the first time the Vietminh used massed artillery, to bombard the French garrison and to deny the French airpower from influencing the battle.

The destruction of the French Mobile Groupe 100 was achieved through a series of large ambushes.
