    I see that someone contradicted me concerning #4.  My position is not that the person who disagrees with the majority will not necessarily join the opposition, more often in US politics they become independent.  Teddy Roosevelt did not run as a Democrat, he formed the Bull Moose Party.  Ross Perot did not become a democrat, either time, both times he formed a separate independent party.  More recently, Joe Lieberman left the democratic party, but he now votes as an independent.  

    They did not join the opposition, they formed a third wing.
