History of London Pubs?

Does anyone know how London pubs started? which one was the first one etc?

Pub is short for public house, which is exactly what describes them: pubs are for everybody and have been around since the time of Romans!

There is a great book on the history of pubs called "Historic Pubs of London" by Ted Bruning and photographer Eric Weller. There is also a very good website on pubs www.pubs.com with all the info you can imagine!
