History of "Hard Liquor"?

Where does the term "hard liquor" comes from? When was "hard" first used to describe alcohol?

It's one of those everyday things that I never really thought about.

  2. The term hard liquor comes from, well it goes down smooth but when it hits your stomach it goes down heard.

  3. It may have had its beginning in the early 20th century temperance movement in the USA. I believe it was a term to deginate higher alcoholic content from lower. Say to seperate distilled alcoholic beverages from only fermented ones. So then vodka and whiskey and such distilled beverages would be called hard liquor and beer and wine, well just beer or wine.

  4. the Good Lord Almighty made "hard liquor" at the end of the 6th day; He said unto thee "It has been a hard few days; I shall now make liquor and it shall be hard." He then spent the 7th day sleeping off the hangover.

  5. I do not know the origin of hard liquor, but I have a feeling the Irish had something to do with it. The Irish lived a hard life and needed a strong drink to loosen up their thick skins. While a pint of the black kept the mind keen a bit of the bottle killed the infirmity's.
