  1. Ok, before about 500 BC, Spain was inhabited by verious tribes, then the Phoenecians, Greeks, and Romans invaded.  After the Roman Empire began to deteriorate, the Visigoths came through and set up small kingdoms.  In about 100 BC, many Jews, escaping persecution by the Romans migrated, setting up a culture that was their golden age, and lasted almost 1600 years.  In 711, the Moors crossed the Strait of Gibraltar and conquered most of Spain, although the Visigoths (Christians) began the slow process of reconquest, reconquering many of the Northern cities fairly quickly, Córdoba in the 12th Century, Sevilla in the 13th Century, and finally, Granada in 1492.  After that, by Royal Decree, Spain was completely Catholic, which affected the culture and history in huge ways.  The Jews and Moors were forced to either convert (and were always referred to as "converts", and treated as second-class citizens, even after generations) or flee the country.  The discovery of America sparked a 200 year Golden Age, when Spain was the largest and richest country in Europe.  From the early 18th Century on, began a slow decline into poverty - well, a drop in the standard of living from the golden age.  Civil war 1936 - 39, and then Franco, terribly strong dictator, many people hated him - serious atrocities.  He died in 1975, leaving his chosen successor, the grandson of the last king, King Juan Carlos I, who has brought Spain up into the 21st Century, and it is now one of the richer countries in Europe.  The Euro and the

EEU are largely responsible for this upturn in the economy.

Sorry, just can´t do anything on a 2000+ year history in 2 - 4 sentences.

OOPS!  Thanks, Conoco, but I guess, trying to keep it short, and all, just the reconquest sort of covered El Cid.  Still, he´s an important mention.

  2. SUE has done a great job to keep the answer as short as it is!

There is far to much to cover in less words than that. You do need to look at something like Wikipedia to get a better understanding of this country's fascinating history, it IS interesting and will help you learn something worthwhile.

  3. The answer of Sue is pretty fine (since it has to be so short) but I think there's a lot of missing things, such us how Spain got to be Spain together, since before there was different crowns, such us the Castillian, Aragon, etc.

The Crusades, the Inquisition, how Spain lost all their colognes, etc. etc.

  4. You should give the person above a best answer. No history of a place like Spain can be summed up in two to four sentences that would have any kind of meaning worth anything to anybody.

  5. Sue´s answer is about as comprehensive as you will get. However, I feel she should have made some mention of Rodrigo Diaz (El Cid). He played a huge part in Spain´s history in Moorish times, but nonetheless you can´t put everything down.
