  1. LOL, I have to think that teachers who ask you to write about why something is important to you when you don't care about it are really asking for it.  :D

But here's a real answer. Even if you don't care about American history, if it hadn't happened, you wouldn't be benefiting from it, and you do. So that can be the overall thesis/topic/argument of your paper.

Then give some examples of things that happened in history and how you benefit. Examples:

    - If the US hadn't been discovered, you'd still be living in the land of your ancestors.

    - If the Pilgrims hadn't settled here with their desire for freedom of religion, we might all have to be the same religion and there might not be separation of church and state.

    - If the colonists hadn't fought the Revolutionary War, we'd just be another British colony, with no right to govern ourselves, paying taxes to Britain instead of to be used in our land.

    - The Bill of Rights and the US Constitution give us a lot of freedoms and the laws to back them up.

    - Western expansion made this country big and rich. Hey, no Hollywood without it.

    - The Civil War stopped the immoral system of slavery. It also kept the country intact; otherwise, we'd be two countries.

    - Many great inventions happened here: the automobile assembly line, computers, etc.

    - The Civil Rights Movement stopped the segregation system and many of the abuses of black people and other minorities.

Now I grant you, the teacher may expect you to be writing about why LEARNING about American history is important to you. If you want to take that route, here are some reasons:

    - everyone should know the origins of his country and culture to be a good citizen

    - understanding history lets us learn from its mistakes and avoid repeating them

    - it helps us appreciate the freedoms we have
