The biggest contribution of monasteries in the west is the preservation of knowledge during the Dark Ages through their libraries and copyists.

The earliest origins date back to the earliest days of Christianity, as far as asceticism goes. "After the reforms of Pachomius, the number of monasteries and monks began to increase rapidly in the East", as they were allowed to produce their own food instead of relying on charity.
