  1. If you look at the "civil" in civiliation and if you have an idea of what that means, then you can come to the conclusion yourself.

  2. The emergence of civilization is the process under which, over many generations ancient humans converted from nomadic hunter-gatherers to agriculturalists. In essence they stopped following the herds for calories and started growing their own calories.

Over time, improvements in the efficiency of agriculture allowed for the creation of non-agricultural classes (because less people could grow enough calories to feed the whole society). This non-agricultural class led to Kingly, priestly, merchant, and artisan classes. It also led to the development of cities (since they did not have to constantly be on the move). These non-hunting, non-agricultural classes from the basis of civilization.

  3. Moving from being hunters and gatherers to farmers whereas they settled down and civilizations grew

  4. No. Its more of a convergence from nomadic lifestyles to a more organized society.

  5. No, there is no such thing as apes to human evolution. The emergence of civilization is the progress from babarbaric human behavior to civilized and orderly humanity.

  6. Civilization is one of those words that's really difficult for anthropologists today.  Evolution doesn't have too much to do with it, except that humanity-level intelligence is necessary.  Other than that, it's really hard to define.  The old definitions have turned out to be racist and wrong.  Even the so-called "primitive" hunter/gatherer bands can often have quite complicated social structures and mythologies.  And while n**i Germany would technically be considered "civilized", in another way it's one of the most barbaric societies we've ever had.  It's even hard to define just based on technological capabilities.  Should writing be a prerequisite for civilization?  That's rather unfair to the Incas, who had the greatest empire in their time but no system of writing.

Generally, though, civilization refers to the complexity of the culture and its technology.  The biggest spurt in civilization, and probably what most people would consider the rise of civilization, is the Neolithic Revolution.  That's when people started farming full-time.  This was incredibly huge for human culture, because it allowed larger groups of people to hang out together in towns and cities, and it freed up a lot of people to become real specialists.  This is why we lived in relatively uncomplicated hunter/gatherer groups for nearly 200,000 years and then, all of a sudden, were sending people to the moon in about 10,000 years.
