  1. Charles Darwin made several important contributions to life science 1) identified the evolutionary phenomenon through observation 2) explained it with his hypothesis of natural selection or "survival of the fittest".

From a mathematical perpective, the phenomenon of evolution (gradual change) also requires hypothesizing, as observation is discrete, and hence is not continuous. There exits, therefore, three hypotheses within Darwinist evolutionary theory:

[hypothesis 1] A. evolutionary (gradual) change exists

[hypothesis 2] B. there is the natural  process of competition and natural selection.

    [hypothesis 3] C. B causes A

On the theoretical (philosophical, epistemological) plane, the idea that qualitative change can occur by the accumulation of incremental quantitative change is also an important contribution made by Chales Darwin, I think, to modern scientific thinking.

  3. Darwin’s theories challenged the existing ideas on creation which provided an alternative though to western culture. His theory on Natural Selection disregarded the church as the ultimate source of knowledge while allowing science to take the place of the church. Furthermore, his thought gave more power to the individual instead of relaying on divine intervention.
