I was invovled in a hit-and-run today. I thought I got his license plate number but one of them was not right. It is just a scratched but not the principle of the whole thing. I followed him and beeped 2 different times and he would not stop... just put his hands in tha air... I want to search for the license plate... are there any web searches that are FREE?

Thanks in advance!

  1. No. If its just a minor scratch, let it go. Always carry a disposable camera in your car just in case.

  2. Not that you can access.  Federal law prohibits release of this information.

    Drivers Privacy Protection Act

    18 U.S.C. § 2721 et. seq.

    (Public Law 103-322)

However, the police or your insurance company would be able to get the information.  But they would not be able to share it with you.

  3. The only folks who know the owner of a car based on VIN, title or license plate number are the Department of Motor Vehicles in your state.

However, under the Driver's Privacy Protection Act (DPPA) they can only release this data to the owner of the data or to another government agency for reasons of public safety.

  4. This is a matter for the police and your insurance agent. Both have access to the DMV records to find out who hit you. Privacy issues prevent web searches.

  5. Nope, not for free or for a fee. Vehicle registration and driver's license information is available only to law enforcement, licensed insurance personnel and state agencies. It is not available to the general public. I can't believe you wouldn't be willing to pay for information like that, either.
