Someone hit my car last night, pretty good. I usually dont pay insurance, b/c i never get in wrecks. Not the point, but is the "hitter's" insurance going to try and rip me off if i don't have an insurance company behind me?

filed police report and all, and gave him description and lic. number of "hitter" car.

  1. The insurance company will not "rip you off".  They will pay for the damages as long as they can prove that it was their insured who was responsible for the damage to your vehicle.

One thing you need to know.  Louisiana is a "No Pay, No Play" state.  This means if you are driving a car without insurance you give up the right to collect your first ten-thousand dollars of personal injury and property damage claims.  Fortunately for you,  accidents caused by drunk drivers or hit and run drivers are not subject to the "No Pay, No Play" law.

You are running a risk not having insurance.  You should at least carry liability coverage.

  2. First of all, aside from not having insurance is against the law, having insurance might have covered (depending on your coverage) your loss.  Secondly, contrary to popular belief, the major insurance companies are good at paying out losses.  The payout will be based on fair market value.  If the cost to repair your vehicle is more than the latter, your vehicle will be totalled.  Lastly, you cannot guarantee that you are wreck proof, you better go purchase insurance coverage before it's too late.  Not only is it the law, if you're driving, it is the right thing to do.

  3. The fact that you have no insurance won't matter but please get some insurance.  I want you to have it in case you hit me and my car.
