Hit by Denver Broncos LB Joe Mays: Houston Texans escape action on QB Matt Schaub injury handling
The Houston Texans are apparently lucky to have escaped a possibility of disciplinary action by the National Football League (NFL) over alleged mishandling of quarterback Matt Schaub’s injury after the team doctor's convincing reply that the player was thoroughly
examined for concussion on the sidelines, allowing him to return to the field after fulfilment of all medical procedures and protocols.
Schaub was hit by Denver Broncos linebacker Joe Mays. As a result of the vicious hit, his helmet was dislodged and a piece of earlobe was cut. The QB helped himself on the sidelines where the team doctor Walter Lowe inspected him for any serious injury,
particularly concussion.
The doctor said the cut piece of earlobe was the extent of injury that the player had suffered so he let him return to action after missing just one play. Schaub did not complain of suffering any symptoms or other complications.
Mays, on the other hand, was suspended for a game which not only cost him the game but full pay for it, and further $50,000 in fine.
Now some sections of media have cited anonymous sources disclosing that the league office had a look at the video of collision between the two players and questioned the credibility of Texans’ decision to let Schaub resume his game when there was a risk
of him suffering concussion.
As earlier said, the team’s doctor explained that he did not need to have a look into the recording of the collision because he had a clear view of it when it happened.
Yet, he further said that the player was thoroughly checked for any serious injuries including head injuries and after being satisfied and sure that there was nothing serious he let him return to action.
Further, the doctor said, he had again examined the player in the locker room after the game to assess a possibility of symptoms or any other issue but did not find any.
Following the explanation, the league’s Head, Neck and Spine Committee has let the Houston Texans walk out free, but according to some unconfirmed reports the committee might make the player undergo some of its tests after having another review of the video
recording.
Schaub in the meantime appears to be healthy and fit and has played a couple of more games since then without any known problem so far.
