Hit by a pitch and still called a strike?

Question

Twins Denard Span was hit by a pitch when he attempted to bunt. Shouldn't the batter still have taken 1st base? He eventually walked but how can a player get a strike called after being hit by the pitch?

if a batter is avoiding being hit by a pitch and turn the wrong way and the bat crosses the plate, is it a strike.  Batter never broke his wrist and the bat was still in the vertical position.
