  1. A tow hitch as two ratings.  If its a 5000 lb. hitch, for example, the hitch itself can tow, or pull, 5000 lbs.  There is also a tongue weight, a lower number, say 250 lbs.  This is the max. vertical weight the hitch itself can carry.

I say "hitch itself" because even though the hitch may have these ratings, your car or truck may not have as high a rating, or it may be higher.  If the hitch is rated for 5000 lbs., but your car is rated for 2500...guess what....you can only safely tow 2500.

Find out your vehicle's tow rating from the Owner's manual.  Sometimes it is also posted on the door sticker.

  3. Are you looking for the weight it can tow, or the weight of the hitch itself? We need to know type and brand.

  5. Class 1.2.3.4. or 5?

  6. Depending on which type of hitch you are using...

5Th wheel hitches are generally rated for up to 15,000 lbs but there are newer ones that go up to 20,000 lbs.

Most hitches that I have seen on common vehicles rate for 2,500lbs to 10,000lbs.

Just depends on the hitch and the vehicle. Hope this answers your question as it was a little vague.
