Question:

Hitting irons, beginner... ?

I have been playing for about a month and a half. When I hit my irons, i hit them all to the 120-133 marker on a clean shot. I can't hit my 5 iron farther than my 9, the only difference is the trajectory I get. I was wondering how I can hit them farther though, I go to the range and see men hit their 7 iron like 160 and then 5 like 190 ( or farther, that is just an estimate)... I would like to be able to do this but am not sure how. I had a lesson to get the proper stance, grip, etc. Then another to get my swing right. So i would like to know some tips on how to hit the ball farther. P.S. I only slice about 1/10 shots with my irons , the others I can aim and come within about 10 feet of the 75 and 100 targets. I am 15 if that helps...

  1. 45 days of hitting golf balls assuming without any lessons is probably not the path you want to continue to walk. Remember, golf is a sport which require a lifetime of learning. If you ask golfers, they will tell you that the fundamentals are VERY important and a cornerstone in playing better golf. My first advise to you and you've probably heard it a thousand times but here's 1001 time you'll hear this, seek help by a teaching professional. In the meantime, check out the lionk I've attached in the reply.

Good Luck and remember, regression before progression.

  2. Distance as well as accuracy are the result of good contact delivered by a solid golf swing. A solid Golf swing only comes with lessons and practice. distance will come from the improved contact.

  3. One thing that will help you is to accelarate through the shot.  Instead of hitting at the ball, swing through it.  One way to make sure that you are doing this by holding your follow through till the ball hits the ground.  The fastest part of your swing should be after you hit the shot.  Also try to hit down on the ball like an axe.  One thing i was taught is to let the club get the ball into the air, don't try to force it into the air.  Good luck man, with practice i'm sure you will figure it out!

  4. Keep having golf lesson and practice heaps than maybe at a later date once you have been playing golf for a few months update the clubs to a brand that will suit you best. Good Luck.

    Have a good one...

  5. you need to get your whole body into your swing to hit the ball farther.  Instead of just swinging with your arms you need to get your hips and legs into it too. But you are still young and distance is definitely not what you need. Hitting the ball straight is far more important and will cause you to shoot better scores. Distance will come with more experience

  6. Welcome to the world of Golf.  It is a fantastic journey.  I will share with you something very simple.

Whether you are swinging a 9 iron, or a 5 iron...your swing speed should be the same...you tempo does not change...the only thing that does change, is the trajectory of flight and that is based on the club that you are using.

Keep in mind, it also depends on the shaft that you are using in these irons of yours...if they have a mid-high kickpoint, your gonna have an ok flight with the 7-8-9 but, when you go to 6-5-4 the flight dies, no life...no energy...dead ball...this is a sign to you, that the shafts may not be suited to your swing, swing speed and tempo...

You cannot get discouraged if you cannot hit a 5 iron 185-190 yds...so don't be hard on yourself.  Thats why a fairway wood is your best friend on par 5s.

Enjoy the game...your on a fantastic journey, and how you get through one hole, defines your character...of faults, mistakes, poor judgement and more times than ever, bad luck...however, how you face these challenges, will build character, handling your own temper, humility and the accomplishment of getting through one hole, and you have another 17 to go...I envy you...to be able to go back to humble beginnings and do it all over again.  peace
