Question:

Hitting off of par 3's?

Another thing Ive had trouble with consistently is hitting a solid shot off of par 3's,especially with short irons(8,9,pw). I do not feel comfortable in the set up and as a result keep topping the ball. Months back,I would make solid contact, hit it high, but pull it too much. Iam teeing it just above the ground, which think is correct, but are there any differences in the swing than if it was a regular short iron shot? Many thanks!

  1. make sure the ball is more to your back foot in your stance when hitting with these irons, that will get you under the ball

  2. try not to use a tee and see what results you get

  3. KEEP YOU EYE ON THE BALL!!!!! If your topping the ball, it's because you're not looking at it, period. Being uncomfortable before a shot doesnt help but topping comes from taking your eye off the ball. Simple tip, back the ball up, take one more club and hit a 3/4 punch while keeping your HEAD DOWN. Works wonders. Also, no one said you HAVE to tee the ball either, I have a problem teeing par 3's because my yardages get screwed up.

  4. Make sure your stance is more toward the back. A divot wouldn't be bad as well.

  5. If you're topping a majority of these shots you may have the ball lined up to far forward. So try lining it up middle to back, and then putting about 70% of your weight on your front foot. Another good idea would be to club up but then only swing about 70 or 80%. This seems to take alot of pressure off.

  6. Tee the the ball low move it back in your stance just inside your right heel if your a rightie

stance a little open to let the hips clear and swing easy....don't try to scoop the ball in the air but rather hit down on it and let the loft of the club get it air born

A good swing thought for me is I'm playing darts,,,, in darts accuracy is more important than throughing hard which helps me think of my target as opposed to hitting the ball hard which i'm prone to do

  7. No there isn't.  If you're topping the ball, you are not maintaining your stance through impact which you have to do.  If you are hitting a short iron into a par 3, that is ideal.

  8. If you can hit an 8 iron properly on a second shot into a par 4, but cant properly hit an 8 iron off a par 3 tee, that has be mental.  The process would be exactly the same except for the fact you tee the ball up.  Tee the ball up only very slightly and do everything else the same.  Get the ball roughly middle of your stance so that you can strike down and through the ball.  Avoid any temptation to get under the ball, scoop, help, assist, etc, the ball into the air.  Hit down and through the ball and the loft on the club will get in the air.

  9. I normally play knock down shots on par 3's ... even some of the longer ones. My course gets pretty windy and times and I find it easier to punch a 9 or 8 iron than to play a full wedge or gap wedge (99m par 3). I can also control the distance better - both into and down wind by doing this. And as I normally get one bounce and then check, it works out perfectly.
