Hitting the 70s’ mark: Novak Djokovic up for new records this season – Tennis Special
World No.1, Novak Djokovic, made his debut at the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals with a close victory against Tomas Berdych as he nicked back while the Czech squandered a match point. Djoker shares the top spot with Spaniard, David
Ferrer, who not only dismantled the local favourite, also threw him out of the event.
Fourteen years after Guillermo Vilas record season win, reaching 130 wins in 144 played games back in 1977, the spectacular Serb is giving an impression of breaking yet another record. Djokovic is looking forward to end his best
season of his career with a cherry on the top by winning at London.
Serb, however, debuted with in a stunning fashion. Beating Berdych, considered as an upset in the group, Group A, 3-6, 6-3, 7-6(3) in a long two hour and forty minutes meeting at the hard indoor, closed the day on Centre Court,
O2 Arena with the sense of satisfaction for the world No.1.
On the other hand, Czech World No.7 did shove his top ranked rival in the start as he mustered away winning the first set showing off his brilliance on the court. After that, Berdych got whipped in the second set run.
Leading the third set with two breakpoints, Berdych made off alarms for the Serbian. Striking back with a millions grams of centrifugal force, Djoker muscled his way through to push on to a tiebreaker that seemingly was a match
point for the Czech at some point. Talking down his rival first mentally and then through a smack of the racket, world No.1 snatched away what was called an unbelievable win for the Serb.
Although Berdych had everything right, however, he still had something wrong and that was his patience. Losing his match point led his head to choose risky shots increasing the number of unforced errors and soon the road to stardom
for the Czech was over.
With more lives than a cat, forced Djokovic endured hasty loss. During the tie-breaker, 'Nole' played to get the ball to the opposite side of the track and waited for his rival’s assessment. Going in his favour, Serb won the rally
leaving Berdych to think on his decisions that led to his loss.
Victorious in the round of 32, Djokovic turned down 70 to his winning number this season and has lost to Roger Federer, Andy Murray, Juan Martin Del Potro and Kei Nishikori this year. Anyhow, Serbian will play Spaniard, David Ferrer
this Wednesday, and second fixture of ATP World Tour Finals.
