Question:

Hives prevention...?

My horse has been reacting to something, and me and my trainer have concluded to fly spray, and I've been treating him with white vinegar in a bucket of water. Would anyone happen to know if there is a certain oil contained in fly spray that would trigger his hives? Any info would be greatly appreciated.

  1. i can say that my horse broke out in hives on 100% of his body one day and didnt know why. Found out that he had an allergic reaction to the type of shavings that i used. He is ok now but I guess something new was done with them. I dont know what it was but now he is ok with those same shavings. I just washed him down with an antibacterial-anti itch shampoo for a few days. They slowly went down. Hope your horse gets better soon.

  2. I'm not sure what pil causes this but I delute my flyspray with water to prevent this.  For open woulds, you should use SWAT.  (an ointment that is gentle enough for open wounds but repels pests)

You could also try feed-through fly repellents.

I would consult your vet about the hives.  He/She might could give him a shot the help reduce the swelling.

    Hope this helps!

  3. It could just be that he has an individual allergy. If there was a certain oil that made hives pop up, then horse owners wouldn't be using it. What brand did you use?
