  1. How to start depends on several things, age of your child, where you live, etc. First thing would be to find the laws for your state/country at http://www.hslda.org.

If your child is already in school follow the law for pulling them, if he's not already in school, follow the law for not sending him. Cost depends on you. Do you want to spend a lot of money? Do you feel comfortable designing your own curriculum?

In this day and age you can find everything you need online or for free. go to google and search for free curriculum, search for (your area) support groups.

  2. Home education can cost as little or as much as you want.  You do not have to follow the national curriculum & many do not.

I don't know where you are from, but in the UK I would suggest you look up Education Otherwise.  This has so much info and advice as well as groups that meet up weekly or monthly to do educational activities.

Places like the National Trust do very cheap deals for home educated children.  Using libraries and museams also cut down the cost alot.

Many parents do not follow timetables/school type ideas but do child led learning.  This is what we did.  English and Maths played a large part but we let the child decide what they learnt.  We now have a 17 year old who is above her age at English and Maths, does Latin, Ancient Greek, French and German, loves history, is very sporty, plays the violin and Piano, has loads of friends and is in the sixth form of the Grammer School and predicted straight As at A. Level.

Whatever you decide, you know your kid best so go for it.  Good luck.

  3. Check with your school district to see if they have a program in place, the one we had was pretty cool, we were given the books and a teacher with a Masters Degree would stop by once a month, he would check on the progress they made and then would set up the next assignments. We worked with him from grades 5-9. The group also met once a month on a field trip to various places in the area.  Look around for support groups in your area or start one of your own!

At the start of 10th grade,we were on our own when it came to high school.  We just plugged into an accredited correspondence school and once the kids were done with that; one went into the business world and she is doing great, my son is a few months away from his Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science.

    Good luck!

  4. hello just a bit of advice.. firstly there is a group called education otherwise..they have a web site. they can put you in touch with local groups.

depending on the age of your children it is really up to you on what books you buy. the letts books from w.h.smiths are good, also cgp books for older children.

if you are taking them out of school you need to write to the school to do this...its a legal formality.

i have 1 child at school and took my other son out 4 years ago. it works well. good luck.

  5. I just started home schooling my 5 year old this year, I live in a state that has little reporting requirements, but you need to check with your state that is the first step, then do your homework on curriculum. If you are starting with a five year old, You can go to Sam's or Books A Million and find some inexpensive complete curriculum work books these will work, but I plan on moving up to a more computerized system like SOS when he gets a little older. As far as support groups, some areas have well organized groups, however I'm still looking for a good group in my area :) Keep an eye on the community happenings in your local news paper.

  6. If at all possible I would go to a homeschool convention and look at all of the options out there...many options and the costs are all different depending on what you choose!  Good luck it's a lot of info to take in...you could also get some homeschool books at the library.  That's what I did the year before my daughter started Kindergarten...I really studied it out and found the curriculum that was best for our family!
