Hizunome Bettero and Gabe Kling advance to next round: Third round of Super Surf International – Part 2
The surfing action continued at Praia da Vila beach with the fourth heat of round of 24 on Saturday with some of the world’s most talented surfers in attendance.
Brazil’s Hizunome Bettero faced off against Australia’s Ben Dunn for a place in the fourth round of Super Surf International. Neither of the two surfers lacked form and an intense contest was expected. However, it turned out to be completely one sided as
Dunn struggled to hold his own out there in the sea with tough conditions prevailing at the site.
Bettero locked his first wave to score 5.57 points off it and soon followed it up with a relatively impressive wave to finish with a two-wave score of 12.00. Dunn, who seemed to have succumbed to the weather, was unable to give a proper response to his rival’s
performance and only managed a 2.17 and 4.23 off his two waves, finishing with a 5.60-point deficit. The weak response cost him dearly, eliminating him from the competition while allowing Bettero to advance to the next stage.
The fifth heat pitted America’s Gabe Kling against Brazil’s Wiggolly Dantas. Both surfers gave an impressive performance during the heat, clearly determined to keep themselves alive in the event. The American surfer kicked off with 5.17 points and soon caught
another wave to thrown down a set of impressive tricks to secure 7.87 points and finish with a two-wave total of 13.04 points.
Dantas responded strongly to the challenge, locking his first wave to score 7.33 points. He only needed a 5.72 from his second wave to clinch the win, but only managed to get 5.00. Missing out on victory by 0.71 points, the local surfer was eliminated from
the competition, while Kling’s place in the next round was confirmed.
The sixth heat saw Brazil’s Ricardo Santos taking on Hawaii’s Granger Larsen for a place in the next round.
Santaos went to work early in the heat, locking a wave to score 5.00 points off it to move into the lead. He caught his second wave in the mid-stage, scoring 5.33 points to finish with a final score of 10.33. The score remained unbeatable and eventually
carried him off to victory.
Larsen opened his account with an impressive 5.93-point wave and only needed 4.40 off his second wave to grab the first position. However, he only managed to get 2.03 from his second wave and ended 2.37 points short of victory. As a result, he was removed
from the race for the event title, while Santos advanced to the next round.
