Hizunome Bettero and Joan Duru remain undefeated in Round 2 of Quiksilver Pro Portugal 2011
The last two heats of Quiksilver Pro Portugal’s round of 48 (Round 2) went down at the beach-break of Ribeira D’Ilhas in Ericeira, Portugal, on Wednesday afternoon, June 15th.
The 11th heat was won by Brazil’s Hizunome Bettero, while Australia’s in-form Julian Wilson settled for second position to qualify for Round 3. Australia’s Nic Muscroft finished third, while South Africa’s Royden Bryson finished at the bottom
position.
France’s Joan Duru won the final heat of round 12 to confirm his place in the next round. Australia’s Dion Atkinson also managed to stay alive in the event by securing the runner-up finish. Portugal’s Tiago Pires and Australia’s Tom Whitaker rounded out
the third and fourth positions respectively, consequently getting eliminated from the competition.
The 11th heat featured an intense battle between Bettero and Wilson, with both surfers looking equally good. The Brazilian started things off with an outstanding 9.50-point wave. Wilson rose up to the challenge and responded with a 9.23-point
wave to narrow the gap and put his rival under pressure.
However, Bettero extended the lead once again by adding 8.00 to his score to finish with a two-wave score of 17.50 points, leaving the Australian in need of 8.28 points. Much to the joy of the Brazilian, Wilson failed to get the required scored and finished
in second place after earning 6.00 points from his second wave to finish with a heat-total of 15.23.
Muscroft tried to keep up with Bettero and Wilson’s amazing performances, but failed to meet the standard set by them. In the end, he finished in third place with a two-wave total of 14.87 points. Bryson finished in fourth position after earning a two-wave
score of 15.24 points. Both the surfers found themselves forced out of the title contention.
In the final heat of Round 2, Duru walked away with top honours by scoring an impressive 8.97 points from his first wave and following it up with a 6.07-point wave to finish with a heat-total of 15.04 points.
Atkinson remained the second most prominent surfer during the heat. He locked his first wave early in the heat to score 6.00 points from it and soon added an additional 6.87 points to his account to finish with a two-wave total of 12.87 points. The score
earned him second position and a spot in the next round.
The local favourite Pires was unable to come up with a decent performance and finished third with a two-wave total of 10.67 points. Whitaker’s two-wave total of 10.33 resulted in his fourth-place finish. Both surfers found themselves ejected from the race
for the event title.
With the conclusion of heat 12, Round 2 and Day 2 of Quiksilver Pro Portugal 2011 came to an end.
