Hizunome Bettero and Mason Ho advance to next round: Fifth round of Super Surf International – Part 1
The fifth round of Super Surf International, an Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) Prime event, went down at the beach-break of Praia da Vila in Santa Catarina, Brazil, on Sunday, June 5th.
The previous round had featured 12 surfers in 4 heats, with the winner of each heat directly advancing to the quarter-finals. However, the second and third-place finishers still had a chance to join the winners by making it through the fifth round successfully.
The surfing conditions were not as bad on Sunday as they had been on the previous days of the event. The five-to-seven foot waves had enough juice in them to allow the surfers to attempt, if not more, then at least one technical trick. The off-shore winds
had died down a little, allowing surfers to remain more in control while surfing waves.
The first heat of the fifth round kicked off with Brazil’s Hizunome Bettero facing off against his countryman, Raoni Monteiro.
While Monteiro seemed to have a better chance of clinching victory, his compatriot proved the speculations wrong and managed to prevail in the showdown.
Bettero scored 6.03 points off his first wave and went on to secure the highest single-wave score of the round later in the heat; 9.17 points. The heat-total of 15.20 turned out to be enough for him to secure victory and qualify for the quarter-finals.
Monteiro was unable to respond to his rival’s excellent performance and after opening his account with 6.50-point wave, he added only a 7.07 to his score to finish with 13.57. Consequently, he surrendered victory and got eliminated from the competition,
a real unfortunate end to what had yet been an impressive campaign.
In the next heat, Hawaii’s Mason Ho took on Brazil’s Ricardo Santos in a battle for survival. Both the surfers were equally impressive, making it anyone’s game.
In the later stages of the heat, the Hawaiian caught a wave to score 6.60 points off it. Santos responded with a 6.00-point wave, following it up immediately with an impressive wave to score 7.00 from it and finish at 13.00 points.
However, Ho was able to regain the lead after locked the second wave and throwing a combination of amazing tricks to earn himself 7.33 points. The amazing second wave carried him off to victory as well as the next stage of the competition, while forcing
Santos out of the event-title race..
