Hizunome Bettero and Ruda Carvalho qualify for the third round at San Miguel Pro Zarautz
Brazil’s Hizunome Bettero and his fellow countryperson Ruda Carvalho successfully made the Round 3 (Round of 48) cut at the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) 6-Star San Miguel Pro Zarautz after walking away with top honours from their respective
Round 2 (Round of 96) heats that went down at the main event site of Zarautz in Basque Country, Spain, on Thursday, August 30.
Australia’s Nathan Hedge finished in second place during the seventh heat to accompany Bettero into the next round, whereas both Australia’s Teale Vanner and Brazil’s Andre Silva got eliminated from the competition after finishing in third and fourth place
respectively.
The eighth heat saw America’s Luke Davis extend his life in the event by finishing behind Carvalho in runner-up place to secure his spot in the third round. Australia’s Garrett Parkes finished third, while Hawaii’s Granger Larsen had to settle for fourth
place. Both the surfers were consequently ejected from the contention for the event title.
Pitted against Hedge, Vanner and Silva in a four-man battle for survival, Bettero sure had his work cut out. However, the Brazilian surfer put on a confident performance and collected a 5.37 and 7.83 off his best-two waves to finish with a decisive heat-total
of 13.20 points.
Hedge collected a couple of scores in the six-point range to finish with a  heat-total of 12.80 points, which turned out to be adequate to put him in runner-up place and carry him through into the next round.
Vanner finished in third place with a heat-total of 11.50 points, while Silva had to settle for bottom-position after registering a two-wave total of 7.34 points. Both the surfers were consequently eliminated from the competition.
The next heat saw Carvalho square-off with Davis, Parkes and Larsen in a four-man battle for the Round 3 spot.
The Brazilian surfer opened his account with an 8.33-point ride and later backed it up with a 6.10-point wave, thus finishing with a resultant heat-total of 14.43 points.
Earning an 8.17 and 6.13 off his best-two waves to reach a heat-total of 14.30 points, Davis secured runner-up place, consequently advancing through into the next round.
Parkes finished in third place with a heat-total of 13.10 points, while Larsen had to settle for bottom-place finish after registering a heat-total of 9.00 points.
