Hjow do i know if a dvd player will read VCD movies or data discs?

my friend has a sanyo that will do it so i know its possible, and also do ps3's read these kind of discs since its like a computer hard drive?

A PS3 will read data discs, but will only let you do limited things-- i.e., play the file formats it knows (MP3, WMA, MPEG, Divx, etc). Your best bet is to Google the model, and/or check a site like videohelp.com which has a lot of resources for many, many models.  Look at the link to "DVD Players" under "Lists" on the left navigation bar.

Different players will play back different kinds of discs with varying abilities (i.e., some players work great playing MP3s but are bad at displaying JPG, and vice versa)
