  1. The general rule is the more passengers the plane holds the higher the pay for the pilots. That is why the most senior pilots fly the largest planes because then they make the most money.

  2. The plane you fly, the years you've been employed by a certain airliner, the number of flight hours you have, and which airliner you are employed have a serious impact on how much you get paid.

It's true that flying bigger birds get you bigger bucks, but not necessarily. In America, FedEx owns 747s, as does American Eagle; however, a 10 year FedEx captain tops out at $150,000 a year while an American Eagle captain makes a much more modest $135,000 a year.

Even in the U.K., a pilot will earn more money if they've got, say 12,000 hours of flight time, 4,000 in a 737 compared to a pilot whose only got 8,000, 1,500 in a 737. Theen you factor in how long you've been employed by the particular airliner. A 7 year captain will always make less than a 15 year captain. That being said, at least here in America, a F.O.'s starting salary is a ridiculous $26,000, even if they've got flight time OVER employment minimums.

  3. Heck no, You want to fly the bigger airplanes. Boeing 767 is a good one. You would want to be a captain. some of thoes guys make over $250,000 a year.

  4. 747 fliers fly LONGER flights.  The average 747 captain makes $190.  The average 737 is $100.  Southwest for 737 has $200 per hor which is more than 747.

  5. Pay rate is less dependent on what airplane you fly and more dependent on which company you fly for and where you fall on their seniority list.

Generally speaking though, a pilot with lots of seniority will tend to bid the larger aircraft with the longer legs.  This is because the schedule those planes fly are more efficient from a pilot's standpoint.  They tend to fly long legs with few landings per duty period.  That means that if a pilot goes to work for 9 hours, he or she may be getting paid for 7 of them.    Smaller aircraft like the 737 tend to do shorter legs and more flights per day.  So a pilot that works for 9 hours may only end up crediting 5 hours of pay.

Most companies do pay more for larger aircraft based on the seating capacity of each plane, but that is not a hard and fast rule.  FedEx for instance has 2 pay rates.  Wide-body and Narrow-body.  There are many different aircraft that fall into each of those categories, and pilots tend to bid to fly the one that fits their personal preferences best.

And to the above poster...American Eagle does NOT own any 747s.  They fly ERJs and Saab 340's.

  6. Generally speaking, cargo carriers pay more (like World or FedEx) and you don't have to listen to the pesky passengers.
