Ever heard of Watergate? - it denotes an event of controversy or secrecy etc.

It all started when President Richard Nixon was standing for re-election and Watergate was the name of the place where his opponents the democrats were having a meeting.

The place was burgled and although Nixon said he had nothing to do with it , he was involved in the following cover-up, which led to his downfall as President.

Watergate is now a general term for a series of political scandals during the presidency of Richard Nixon that resulted in the indictment of several of Nixon's closest advisors and his own downfall  on August 9, 1974.
