I live in Picayune, Mississippi and I was just wondering if you think I need to evcuate for Hurricane Gustav. And would Jackson, Mississippi be a good place to evacuate?

  1. I'd hold off on actually evacuating.  However being prepared won't hurt.  Make sure the car has a full tank, you've got your most treasured possessions packed and some emergency food and water.

Here are some other ideas for being prepared.

You can also keep an eye on the weather and advisories.

Jackson should far enough inland to avoid the worst of the storm.  When it passes over land the storm looses energy that would come from warm ocean water to keep it going.  I think Katrina lost a lot its force by the time it got to Hattiesburg.  That was a strong catagory 3 event and the weather folks have not commited themselves to how strong Gustav will be but some are hinting at a catagory 3.
