My 8.5 month old daughter has a clear runny nose and often rubs her nose with her fist like it's really itchy. But she's not congested. She was pretty cranky yesterday so wondering if this could be related to teething (given her age)?

Maybe allergies?

Something else I should be concerned about...?

This is the second time this month (only lasted 3 days the 1st time) she's had this so now I'm curious, but not concerned enough to call the ped. Maybe I should be??? Yikes!

  1. don't worry as long as no fever and still eating not a problems, nothing to do for it except use bulb syringe to such out nose and saline nasal spray 2 or 3 times a day

  2. It does sound like allergies and I would do the bulb thing like another poster said..

*your welcome, can't believe that person even called you names!!*

  3. Sounds like allergies to me.  I know that when mine act up my nose and eyes can get itchy.  For myself living in IL the past week I have noticed my allergies acting up-seasonal.  They do make Claritin for babies, talk to your Dr. about it.

  4. It sounds exactly like allerges!

  5. I'd say it was because she is teething. Both my kids got clear runny noses when they teethed. If her eyes are a little "runny" also and she seems to be itching htem as well it could also be allergies. Good luck

  6. It sounds like maybe allergies, from what I have learned after going to the DR and asking during a well baby check, if the mucus or snot is clear most likely it is allergies, its when its a color like green or yellowish, is when it is a cold.

So since they are too young to have allergy meds. You would have to use a bulb syringe and saline drops. You can purchase the saline or make your own. I believe its, 8oz of warm water, pinch of baking soda and 1/4 tsp of table salt. Mix that together til dissolved, and take a syringe dropper and place 8-10 drops in each nostril, and then take the bulb syringe and suck out the ickies. I had to do this a couple of times and Sarah HATED it with a passion. But after about 4 times, she finally got to breath better through her nose.

I say if she is eating fine, not fussy and is acting pretty normal and it doesn't seem to bother her. Then I wouldn't worry so much. She could be teething, but I wouldn't say that was the case with the congestion. If you have more concerns on it, just give a ring to her DR. and they should help more. Good Luck!!

  7. It can be allergies!  I got my son tested for allergies this spring (he was 10 months old).  His eyes were very runny and so was his nose (clear).  He rubbed his nose all the time too.  So I took him in to be tested (mainly for food, but that's unrelated to the nose and eyes).  While they were at it, they tested him for dogs and dust maybe.  They can't do much at this age.  He came up positive for dogs (which, sadly, we have), and they thought (even though they can't test them for seasonal allergies until 2) that he had bad hay-fever.  So they put him on 2 doses of meds. every day for a month.  I had to give it to him with a aspirator (since he's too young for nasal spray), and it helped a lot!  It completely cleared him up!  By-the-way, the dog we kept, we just keep things really clean (he doesn't shed anyway).

Just know it may be allergies, but you probably won't get the answers you're looking for at this age.  Find an allergist in your area and see what they say!
