  1. S$59 is roughly  US$ 39.  Try the Metropole for about US$ 40/night (http://www.vietnamstay.com/hotel/metropo... the Saigon Riverside for about US$ 37/night (http://www.vietnamstay.com/hotel/saigonr... or the Dai Nam for about US$ 32/night (http://www.vietnamstay.com/hotel/dainam/...

All are very nice, rated 3-star and near restaurants, pasar malams and  other types of markets/shops.   You'll have a great time in HCMC!

  2. When will you depart?

  3. There's an excellent list on this Australian website with last minute and year round deals, the majority are under $59.

I couldn't find anything with the term "pasar malam" in Ho Chi Minh, but the following may be of help.

Vietnam is very cheap, and if you wait until you get there you may find some a couple of dollars cheaper - but personally i don't like wasting my holiday time. Here's some examples:

[ Use the tool which says "Sort by Name | Type | Location | Price" ]

    Vietnam:http://www.cheaperthanhotels.com.au/Viet...

    Nha Trang:http://www.cheaperthanhotels.com.au/Viet...

    Hanoi:http://www.cheaperthanhotels.com.au/Viet...

    Ho Chi Minh:http://www.cheaperthanhotels.com.au/Viet...

    Dalat:http://www.cheaperthanhotels.com.au/Viet...

    Phan-Thiet:http://www.cheaperthanhotels.com.au/Viet...

Another good resource is the National Tourism Office for Vietnam who you can email your questions to:

  4. Accommodations in Vietnam is usually very cheap. Food is EVERYWHERE in Vietnam, so being near food is not going to be a problem. You probably  want to be in Ben Thanh District (District 1) so you will be near everything. I have no idea what "pasar malam" is, and I assume it's probably in or close to District 1.

Hotels in District 1 range from $10/night for native but still decent accommodations to $300/night at the Rex or Caravelle, where you will be treated like you own the world (you better own the world at those prices).

    Have fun there!
