Hoang Nam Nguyen and Weng Jun Saw book their place in the main round: 2011 Malaysia Open GP Gold
Vietnam’s Hoang Nam Nguyen and Malaysia’s Weng Jun Saw have booked their place in the Men’s Singles main round after beating their respective opponents in the 2011 Malaysia Open GP Gold, in Malaysia, on Tuesday, May 3.
Hoang Nam defeated Kim Loong Hoo of Malaysia in straight sets of 31 minutes, whereas Weng Jun tamed the team-mate, Chi Wing Lim, in a three-set fight of 50 minutes.
The Vietnamese open his campaign against the Malaysian in a planned way as he targeted all the weaker areas of his opponent. He remained successful in building a good lead of 11-6 in the opening part of the set.
Kim Loong narrowed the gap by playing better badminton in the second half of the opening set. He was at 17-19, when Hoang Nam scored the remaining points and won the set by a 21-17 margin, in just 16 minutes.
In the second set, Hoang Nam remained ahead of the Malaysian from the start of the game. Kim Loong tried to catch up the pace of the opponent, but failed to reduce the deficit as Hoang Nam was quickly moving in all areas of the court. The Vietnamese won
the set with a 21-16 score, in just 15 minutes. The ending score of this 31-minute two-set fight was, 21-17 and 21-16.
In another qualifying-round match in Men’s Singles category, Weng Jun proved his worth against Chi Wing. In the opening set, both shuttlers put up a good show by playing a top class game and progressed with an equal pace. The score was 9-9, when Weng Jun
geared up his speed and played a flawless game. He won the opening set in 17 minutes by a 21-16 margin.
Chi Wing bounced back in the second game by playing an aggressive game. He remained toe-to-toe with the opponent by reaching at 17-17. At this crucial stage of the match, Weng Jun made a few unforced errors and lost the second set in 18 minutes with a narrow
margin of 19-21.
In the final set, Weng Jun showed no mercy to the opponent by keeping his speed high. He took only 14 minutes to finish the final set with a 21-12 margin. The finishing score of this 50-minute long three-set battle was, 21-16, 19-21 and 21-12.
