Women’s Beach Volleyball action started off in Quebec, Canada yesterday, Tuesday, July 19, with the Country Quota Playoffs of the Quebec Open Jeep Beach Volleyball tournament. Canadian and American teams competed for berths in the Qualification Tournament
as four out of eight local duos qualified for the next stage of the tournament in the Canadian CQs. Similarly, Country Quota matches among three U.S. tandems promoted one successful team into the next stage of the tournament.
The 2011 Quebec Open Jeep is scheduled to run from July 19 to 24. The event invited a total of 48 women’s teams from 29 countries of the world for the large beach volleyball tournament in Quebec.
USA is represented by six teams in the Quebec Open. Three teams appeared in the Country Quota Playoffs, while three high-ranking U.S. duos will show up at the Main Draw stage. The American Country Quota Playoffs were played on Tuesday afternoon. Following
teams were lined-up for Country Quota Playoffs:
Brittany Hochevar-Lisa Rutledge Heather Hughes – Emily Day Summer Ross – Tara Roenicke
The pairing of Hochevar and Rutledge earned a bye in the first fixture of the day in American Country Quotas. The second proper match saw Hughes-Day in competition with Ross-Roenicke. It was a long match, which continued for almost 47 minutes and revealed
results after three sets. Hughes and Day performed in a great way and secured opening set with massive margin of 11 points. After taking a jump-start in the match, the duo of Hughes and Day had to face strong thump from opponents. Ross/ Roenicke came strong
on Hughes/ Day in the following two sets and captured both sets. Duo of Ross/ Roenicke was in good position to advance to the next round; only if they would capture the second match.
However, the duo of Ross and Roenicke could not live up their expectations of moving ahead. They saw the pairing of Brittany Hochevar-Lisa Rutledge on the other side of the net in the second match. It was a completely different scenario as Hochevar/ Rutledge
were generally considered a team with more experience. They were equipped with all the necessary tools and tricks to win the match. Hence, it was a real test of abilities and skills for Ross/ Roenicke.
Match started out with an exchange of jump-serves as Hochevar made good use of her hands and hit the ball skilfully. The powerful hits served the purpose and opponents were pushed behind. Meanwhile, Rutledge offered her opponents a solid defence. Both team-mates
perfectly complimented each other and won opening set by posting 21-17. They put more pressure on their opponents in the second set and remained focused on the target. Better combination of defence and attack allowed them to win the second set and they announced
match victory. Hochevar/ Rutledge made it to the Qualification Tournament which will be held on Wednesday.
