Hockey Hall of Fame inducts Joe Nieuwendyk, Ed Belfour, Doug Gilmour, Mark Howe -NHL News Update
National Hockey League (NHL) legends, Joe Nieuwendyk, Ed Belfour, Doug Gilmour and Mark Howe were inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame on Monday morning, November 14, 2011, and to top the prestigious occasion off, they were each presented with rings by
chairman, Bill Hay.
"It's what makes it such a special place", Nieuwendyk said. "It doesn't discriminate. I think the common bond with a lot of these faces that I see on the walls, especially the recent ones that I have some history with, is a real genuine passion and a love
for the game and high competitive spirit in all of us".
Joe Nieuwendyk, now 45-years-old, was drafted as the 27th overall pick during the 1985 NHL Entry Draft by the Calgary Flames. He had spent nine seasons with his original draft team before being transferred to the Dallas Stars, where he spent another
nearly seven seasons before joining the New Jersey Devils, Toronto Maple Leafs and lastly the Florida Panthers.
Winner of three Stanley Cups, Nieuwendyk is currently the General Manager of the Dallas Stars and continues to be a dominating figure in the hockey world.
Ed Belfour, a player who also served his last season with the Florida Panthers, was one of the leagues renowned goalies and continues to have influence on the newer generation of defenders even today. Till this day, Belfour has the third most wins in the
NHL and still maintains his renowned record.
“I think every kid growing up who loves the game of hockey wants to be a player”, Howe said.
Mark Howe, son of one of the league’s best players in history, Gordie Howe, certainly performed up to the name of his father by being one of the best defenseman the NHL has ever seen.
With his charismatic and dominating performance, Howe was a force to be reckoned with.
He spent most of time in the NHL with the Philadelphia Flyers and ended it by playing three final seasons with the Detroit Red Wings.
The event might not have been glamorous and star-studded, but it definitely was a time to remember and pay homage to the greats of the sport.
