Hockey India starts serious efforts to resolve coaching issues
Hockey India (HI), the governing body of the sport has started serious efforts to resolve the issues being faced by the Indian hockey team particularly the selection of a new coach and captaincy problems. Indian hockey team is playing without a coach after
the 16th Asian Games, when Harendra Singh, the national coach resigned from his post after India lost heavily to Malaysia in a stunning semi-final and failed to acquire a berth in the final of the tournament.
On the other hand, the contract of Spanish-born Chief Coach of Indian hockey team, Jose Brasa was expired on December 5th, 2010 and unlikely to be renewed for second term after a quandary arouse between him and the former captain Rajpal Singh.
A few of former Olympians and players also started opposition citing that Jose Brasa did not have potential to train the players for international competitions.
A meeting of the newly established Development Committee of the Hockey India (HI) was held with Pargat Singh in the chair for the first time, which reviewed vast range of issues including probable names for the post of coach, management issues and the captaincy
matters.
An official of the Hockey India said that some ten persons from within the country have showed their interests to take the charge of the team as a coach of the national hockey team. On the other hand, Hockey India also went up to the International Hockey
Federation (FIH) for seeking their recommendations in this regard.
Among the local candidates, Harendra Singh, Dhanraj Pillay, Jude Felix, Gerhard Rach, Ranjan Negi, and Clarence Lobo are prominent names. However the authorities concerned have not replied any of the candidates thus far in this regard.
The official of Hockey India was of the view that the Development Committee discussed all the proposals for the post of the coach in details and will meet again on January 5th to finalise the name of the trainer. He further said that the committee
is mulling to give enough time to the new coach.
The committee was of the view that new coach should be awarded at least four years to prepare the squad for the upcoming mega events. The entire process for the selection of the coaches and captain would be completed by the end of January 2011, he added.
