The coach of Indian’s hockey team, Rajpal Singh is likely to give up his post for what he termed as ‘constant humiliation’ by Chief Coach, Jose Brasa in the World Cup, the Commonwealth Games and in the recently concluded Asian Games, where India obtained
a bronze medal.
Rajpal Singh, skipper of Indian hockey squad said that he was going to quit from his post and will soon inform Hockey India in this regard, adding Jose Brasa repeatedly disgraced him in the previous tournaments and he remained silent in the best interest
of the game.
A captainship crisis shook Hockey India prior to the World Cup 2010, when Rajpal Singh replaced Sandeep Singh as captain of the Indian hockey team. However, Chief Coach Jose Brasa wanted to appoint his favourite player, Prabhjot Singh as captain of the Indian
team but selectors opted for Rajpal Singh.
Under Rajpal Singh, Indian squad earned humiliated 8th position in the World Cup. However it qualified for the final in the Commonwealth Games and earned a silver medal in the history of Indian hockey for the first time but could only manage a disappointing
bronze medal in the recently concluded Asian Games.
Rajpal Singh said, “I made up my mind to resign four months back but decided no to do it as the Commonwealth and the Asian Games were up ahead. But now I feel best time to speak up as a powerless skipper who even does not know his duties could not deliver
results.”
Rajpal further said that there was no international event lying ahead for next few months, thus he took a decision to sound off his viewpoint before the authorities and the masses.
Explaining the suspected reasons, Rajpal Singh said that Jose Brasa wanted to appoint one of his favourite players Prabhjot Singh as skipper of the squad but when it was not happened, he started to disgrace him in the team. He further said that he was treated
like 16th player and was not called in the meetings.
Rajpal also claimed that the mental torture being subjected to him was main reason behind the poor performance of the team in the World Cup, the Commonwealth and in the Asiad.
Another senior member of the Indian hockey team also affirmed the claims of Rajpal Singh saying that he had been given very limited powers and he had not any authority to speak in the team’s affairs.
