  1. The most famous ones have pretty much been covered.

I'll add Todd Fedoruk getting his cheekbone shattered by Derek Boogaard in a fight.

Also, Brian Berard getting hit in the eye with Marian Hossa's stick. Almost ended his career.

  2. the one I most remember is Clint Malarchuk with Buffalo in 1989.  A skate blade slit his jugular vein and trainer who luckily had some military experience and knew what to do saved his like by putting his hand inside his neck and pinching the vein until doctors could sutur the wound.  Reports are that 9 fans fainted, 2 had heart attacks and 3 players vomited on the ice at the sight on the injury.

Going back farther into history though one person has died from an injury during a game.  Bill Masterston died in 1968 after being hit and then cracking the back of his head off the ice.  the impact with the ice caused a massive brain hemerage and blood gushed from his muth and nose.  He died two days later in hospital.

  3. February 21, 2000

Marty McSorley hit Donald Brashear in the head with his stick in the closing seconds of a Bruins-Canucks game, causing Brashear to--fall back and crack his head on the ice-- suffer a grade 3 concussion.  He lost consciousness immediately after hitting the ice.  McSorely was charged with assault and eventually found guilty, giving him 18 months probation.  The NHL suspended him for the remainder of the season and then the following season (2000-2001).  It was the longest suspension in NHL history and ended up being McSorely's final game in the league.  The only action this guy has on the ice now is an episode on Sports Science.

Just for the record, Brashear is still in the NHL, so it might not be the worse ever ... but it resulted in the worst sentence from an incident in the NHL's long history.

  4. On February 10, 2008, in a game between the Florida Panthers and the Buffalo Sabres, teammate Olli Jokinen's skate blade accidentally cut the external carotid artery of Zednik's neck. Both players were skating towards a corner: Jokinen was skating down the wing for a body check and Zednik was skating behind the net. Jokinen collided with Sabres forward Clarke MacArthur, knocking Jokinen off balance. Jokinen then fell forward with his feet flying up. His right skate blade struck Zednik's exposed neck, and Zednik immediately skated to the Florida bench, leaving a significant trail of blood on the ice.

On March 22, 1989, between the visiting St. Louis Blues and Malarchuk's Buffalo Sabres. Steve Tuttle of the Blues and Uwe Krupp of the Sabres collided at the mouth of the goal, and Tuttle's skate caught Clint Malarchuk on the neck, severing his jugular vein/carotid artery.

  5. Jay named the two bloodiest (and most frightening!) hockey injuries the NHL has seen, as far as I'm concerned. Watch the videos; they're pretty much self-explanatory.

  6. yzermans eye was pretty bad it hurt i should know the exact same thing happened to me except i didn't break my eye socket i just bruised it and i'm at school and we can't get on youtube so sry i don't have a vid but zednik and malarchuk are some other bad injuries

  7. Eric Lindros  - 1999 hard shot went under his pads odd, collapsed his lung.

Everyone is saying Zednick because he cut cut in the throat by a skate this year.

Bertuzzi hit Steve Moore's head against the ice in 2004, breaking vertabrae, he was suspended and criminally prosecuted for it.

1996 - Claude Lemiuex slams Kris Draper's face into the area along the bench from behind, needed big time surgery to get it back in place.

  8. 20 bucks says Zednick comes up! LOL

Go to youtube and type in Richard Zednik in the Search box! Enjoy!

  9. The worst of the bunch was career ending.... Brian Berard.  opposing team froward spin-o-rama shot adn his stick follow thru cut and whacked Berards eye.  Doc's told him a 3% chance of ever seeing out of it again.  Vision started to come back and he and his agent contacted several teams for tryouts. the Rangers invited him and told him, he would have to forfeit his Insurance check ($1 million) in order for them to sign him. He did so and began playing again. A truly lucky guy for obvious reasons.

Drapers was just plain ugly because of the situation, DIRTY hit from behind, good ol'e (Claude Lemeiux) smashed face and jaw against the baords. Claude got paid back the following year by Darren Mc Carty, Drapes good buddy and teammate! Now that was SWEET REVENGE!

Lest we forget the big old goon BERTUZZI pouncing on the back and driving Steve Moore a couple of years ago as well! Breaking a bone in his neck/back...also career ending and still going thru the courts I believe (?)
