Hockey Legend Mats Sundin regrets not having retired as a Toronto Maple Leaf -NHL Special
Many players come and go, but there have been very few who have made an impact wherever they go and Mats Sundin was definitely one of those selected few. Despite having one of the most colourful and celebrated careers in the history of the National Hockey
League (NHL), Mats Sundin regrets not having retired as a member of the Toronto Maple Leafs franchise.
An original draft pick of the Quebec Nordiques, which is now a defunct club, Mats Sundin was selected as the first overall during the 1989 NHL Entry Draft. He was obviously amazing coming right into the major league after spending a lot of time playing in
Sweden, his country of origin, but it was truly a remarkable change when he joined the Toronto Maple Leafs for the 1994-1995 regular season.
“In my last season I wasn’t sure I wasn’t going to play anymore,” Sundin said, according to thestar.com. “I think it took six months or so before I decided to play again. Sometime it’s out of your control; you can’t decide how your career ends. No doubt,
Toronto is dear to my heart. I love this city. We (Sundin, wife Josephine and their infant daughter) live in Sweden, but we come back here often and it’s very special to me.”
Sundin finished off his career with the Vancouver Canucks in 2008-2009, which was his first and only season with the club after spending 13 seasons with the Toronto Maple Leafs and achieving a number of remarkable feats with them.
In a total of 1,346 games played up until now, Mats Sundin boasts a career total of 1,349 points, of which 564 are goals and 785 assists along with 1,093 minutes in penalty time as well.
He was also inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame this year and continues to be an icon for many players and fans all around the world. Not just due to his reputation as player and ability to score points, but also being a leader and someone who dedicated
his life towards the betterment of the sport in all.
The Toronto Maple Leafs are in a very weak place at the moment as they struggle to make it anywhere near the playoff line. They failed to make them last season and do not have a bright outlook despite being the highest revenue generating teams in the league
and well known all around the world.
